Benjamin Hammond probably was one of the American raiders that attacked the
Gaspee.
This is one of the Rhode Island raiders on which we do not have much other
than his name. As more information becomes available, it will be added on
this page.
Natalie Robinson, the author of Revolutionary Fire: The Gaspee Incident
listed as participants in the Gaspee affair "Justin Jacobs, Benjamin Hammond,
Paul Allen, John Kilton, Simeon Olney " These names were probably garnered
from the notes of John Howland, the original director of the RI Historical
Society, who was 14 years old in 1772, and stood on the dock at Fenner's
Wharf as the longboats pulled out to attack the Gaspee, and years later wrote
notes about it.
This is all the evidence to date about his participation.
Nothing definitive
has been found about Benjamin Hammond. The only Hammond listed in
the 1770 List of Providence Taxpayers is a Jonathan B. Hammond. Jonathan B.
Hammond lived nearly across North Main Street from John, Nicholas, and Joseph
Brown.
This Jonathan was the son of William Hammond who was born 31 December 1685 in
Bristol, Rhode Island. [See

2004.] He married Mary Whipple, daughter of Jonathan and Margaret (Angel)
Whipple. Jonathan Whipple was born in 1664 and died 28 September 1721. William
Hammond died 21 January 1763 in Providence, Rhode Island. William and Mary
had the following children.
