![]() ![]() Paul Allen was one of the Gaspee Raiders that attacked the English Navy ship Gaspee in 1772. Our main web history page on the RHODE ISLAND MEN WHO ATTACKED THE GASPEE in capturing and burning the Gaspee tells you why our list is longer than the usual lists you may find in some sources. The essence of what we said there is that:
In that spirit — I think it is logical to identify Paul Allen born 24 Apr 1755, as a "possible" Gaspee raider. This is based on the following limited facts.
Paul Allen is listed as a Gaspee raider by Natalie Robinson's Revolutionary Fire, written for the Rhode Island RI Committee for the Humanities in 1984. She did not list sources in her account. There is only one Paul Allen listed in the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Database with dates which would corresponding to being present in 1772, to wit; a Paul Allen who died 17 Feb 1800, buried at Providence's Old North Burial Ground. This Paul Allen was born 7 Dec 1742 in Braintree, MA, which is about 25 miles northeast of Providence. He was the fifth of 12 children born to Micah Allen and Mary (White) Allen. He would have been 29 years old in 1772. There is a Paul Allen listed in a group of people setting up the Congregational Church in Providence in 1770. Among the other names listed are RI Lieutenant Governor Darius Sessions, a known co-conspirator, and Ephraim Bowen, a known Gaspee raider. The 1790 census of Providence shows a household headed by a Paul Allen consisting of 1 male over 16 years old; six males under 16; 3 females and one other free person residing therein.
